Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of Rivers State, has unequivocally reiterated his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amidst recent tensions and the looming threat of expulsion from party stalwarts.
Wike’s political trajectory took an unexpected turn in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, precipitating a rift with the PDP leadership over his unwavering commitment to the party’s internal power-sharing arrangement, advocating for the presidential ticket to be zoned to southern Nigeria.
His unwavering stance resulted in Wike withholding his support from Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s nominee, instead throwing his weight behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who ultimately clinched the presidency.
Following President Tinubu’s appointment of Wike as a minister, conjectures have swirled regarding his party affiliation and whether he remains a bonafide member of the PDP.
In a media engagement with journalists in Abuja, Wike directly addressed the speculations, asserting, “I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Have you ever seen me change anything?”
This assertion comes amidst observations of Wike’s conspicuous absence from PDP gatherings and electoral campaigns, particularly in recent by-elections. Nonetheless, Wike expressed no remorse over his choices, underscoring the necessity of forging ahead.
“The one I supported previously, what transpired? I have opted to take a hiatus. As you see me now, everyone should bear their own burden,” he remarked, reflecting on his political decisions.
Wike also defended his position during the presidential campaign, questioning the rationale behind punitive actions for his adherence to the party’s constitution and his prerogative to endorse whomever he deemed suitable.
“Why discipline me? For what reason? What transgression have I committed? I am a proponent of the party’s constitution,” Wike countered, challenging the basis for any punitive measures against him.
